Engineering From Day One

May 6, 2021
Presenters: Tirupalavanam G. Ganesh, Ph.D.; Robin Hammond; Jennifer Velez

The May TI Talks speaker series event featured a team from the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.

The speakers shared an initiative focused on creating paths to engineering for underrepresented populations. They discussed:

  • Developing partnerships to form a Collective Impact Alliance
  • Strategies to enhance student interest and persistence in engineering
  • Training and support for teachers
Please find slides to the presentation below.

Session details:

Engineers from Day One is a broadening participation in engineering effort sponsored by the National Science Foundation’s INCLUDES Design and Development Launch Pilot program. This talk focused on sharing how a Collective Impact Alliance was developed with Arizona State Universities, area K–12 school districts and community colleges, and industry partners to enhance entry and persistence in engineering. This TI Talk shared how these collaborators worked together to collectively broaden participation in engineering for first-generation students, underrepresented minorities, women and those with socio-economic need. What was the overall framework for the work? What were the shared goals across collaborators? What were the strategies employed? How did the collaborators contribute to meet the common agenda?

Who should attend:

  • STEM/Engineering industry-university and K–12 liaisons
  • School district leaders, school leaders
  • Education service center leaders
  • University and community college faculty
  • Community organizations focused on STEM
  • State education leaders in math, science, STEM, CTE and workforce
  • Grant writers
